approximately one-half of the population is aged 15 and under
40% of children do not attend school due to poverty, sickness or displacement

Because one-half of the population of the Congo is 15 or under, they are not counted in the above literacy ratings. Given the Congo's recent history, conflict along the eastern coast and poor economic conditions, many children are not able to attend school at all. There are few books, many deteriorating school buildings, and overall very poor learning conditions.

Yet, they are eager to learn. There are several dozen children watching from the outside because they cannot afford to go to school.
